Like most of the general area, the Northwestern San Fernando Valley was home to Native Americans before Spanish colonization in the 18th Century. The area known today as Chatsworth was part of the 19th Century Mexican land grant and following the Mexican war, it became the largest land grant in the U.S State of California.
