For almost 8,000 years, the area of Canoga Park has been inhabited by Native Americans from the Tongva and Chumash tribes. During Spanish rule, this area was part of the San Fernando mission, while during Mexican rule of California, a separate ranch was granted by then Governor Pio Pico to three Native Chumash.
After purchasing a ranch in the area, Alfred Workman introduced imported Australian eucalyptus trees in 1869. The trees spread through Canoga Park gradually, with all the eucalyptus trees throughout Southern California being derived from Workman’s original trees.
